Bird Watching in the Fall

Every spring and fall, Block Island, Rhode Island is host to a variety of migratory bird species passing through. Block Island's coastline habitat is home to many species including shore birds, wading birds and songbirds. Songbirds flock to the island, providing beauty as well as filling the air with their lovely songs.

The Block Island National Wildlife Refuge is an excellent place to spot an abundance of birds. At Rodman's Hollow, on the southeast side of the island, you may spot a northern harrier, a threatened species that feeds and nests here. This preserve is sponsored by a partnership between the Nature Conservancy, the Block Island Conservancy, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Town of New Shoreham.

Block Island offers miles of hiking trails for your island bird watching expeditions, from meadows to wooded trails to ocean bluffs. The island provides several blinds for birders to use when bird watching. Bring your binoculars and camera!
